footbridge by pilot cinema?

Postby ANDY P » 01 Dec 2005, 09:49

Hi I am trying to find out about a footbridge that was over the railway line by the Pilot Cinema, when it came down and if any pics of it are still around.

railway bridge

Hello Andy. Bridge came down in the early 70s I think, and was then used
behind the Howerd school for awhile, but has since been replaced.I think
the bridge over the Hunstanton line came down about the same time.

Since my last post I have found out that the bridge from kettlewell lane was
used over the norwich line, there is a good folder on the lynn railway in the
reference section at lynn library.EWW.

Hi Andy, I must have gone by the bridge near the Pilot Cinema hundreds of times as a child, but I can't remember it. I hope a photo turns up some time, it would be interesting to see.

Maps showing the bridge - 1886 (left) and 1929.

Hi EWW, I remember the kettlewell lane bridge, used it a few times, handy shortcut. My Mum tells me how as a small child she used to stand on the bridge and watch the workers at the electrics works moving coal about to power the generator. On one occasion she got her head stuck in the railings on the bridge and could not get out and was very upset. She was there quite some time untill a man came along and helped her out. :D

OG,
the first pic should show many of the Fishers End Yards, but I would have thought the bridge came down early 60's.

I think I have posted these before in another thread but heyho. Walked over this bridge many times in days gone by. These two pictures show
the bridge after it was knocked down by an over laden truck full of timber planks. This happened about Jan 1920 says the write up in the local rag.

The couple in the doorway so I am told by an old Northender are Mr and Mrs Allen owners of Allens smokehouse. You can see Allens Yard in
old-gits map. It was the last working smokehouse in the Northend.

Extaordinary, never knew any of this existed until this week! My oldest rail memories of Lynn are the goods yard just before texas homecare was built and seem to recall there was another yard out South Lynn by what was Mitchell Cotts transport, so probably for the beet factory....

If you wanted to go up North from Lynn you had to take a train from Lynn station to South Lynn and then up from there.
When I joined BR I had to go to Peterboro North station from S Lynn for my medical.
