Kings Lynn Railway Area Photographs

Postby incony » 01 Mar 2011, 21:20

While searching for some information, i found a source of photographs showing stations and lines around and including Kings Lynn.

For example, here is some of Kings Lynn Station environs..

http://www.rcts.org.uk/features/mysteryphotos/index.htm?location=King%27s+Lynn&srch=&page=0

There are some of the line to Hunstanton,Swaffham and Wisbech... and many ive not seen before.

You can see from the site, one can scroll down a list... and choose.. its worthwhile, since many are taken between stations, and show parts one cannot see now..try it...

The other way, is to click on mystery photographs, and use the text search.. pics Y-16 To Y-20 show a lot of this area, so try that too... Type Y-17 into the text search box for example..

I do not want thanks for any research I am able to help out with. I just love doing it.

for me, a very special photo, was seeing the approach to where the M & GN crossed the GER Line to Swaffam on its way to Middleton Towers, with the bridge still in place.. i pass that view nearly everyday now.. but the bridge is gone.. and the views of Hunstanton , with the signal box still in place.. remarkable pictures.. so good to share...:)

but the one with the bridge which is thought to be the line to dereham , cant be the old m and gn crossing because the line was single track to middleton after the kings lynn siidings.. not double... and the bridge structure is the wrong shape... :(

The one for me is looking up towards Hunstanton with the bridge over the track
beside the Gaywood Park School, so many memories. The people that put that
site together have done a superb job, so much dedication. Great find incony.

Don't know if these are of any help but here are a couple of photos of South Lynn and King's Lynn stations taken on April 20th 1956 by the U.S Airforce, the photos are part of a collection my late grandfather owned and i recently scanned a lot of them in to preserve them. These shots have been cropped from much larger images which are probably too big to post on here (you need to zoom in quite a lot), i will crop some more soon and post them on here, I also have ones from Hunstanton, Cromer, Sherringham, Docking, Castle Acre, Castle Rising, Fakenham, Ringstead, Norwich, Sandringham, Wells Next The Sea, East Dereham, Houghton Hall, Holkham Hall and London (all taken between 1955 and 1956) if anyone is interested.

Delbert has previously posted a map section, this is (I think) an earlier map than the one posted before. This is from the 1929 Edition and shows the full extent of South Lynn Station.

Image

Not shown is the siding into Cooper's, but it is on the map.

And the other edge catches at least part of Hardwick Road Siding.

Image

There might be another 1/4" or so to reveal on the eastern edge of Hardwick Road, I need to do some careful restoration and remove some gummed paper tape from the map.
I choose to share some of my images with this forum, but please respect my wishes. View them where I display them and don't download, copy, print or use them to create other works without my written permission. I can provide prints if requested.
