Wow, thanks so much for the pics, I had intended to print them off to give to my new friend when I saw him today but the printer needs new ink and I'm not good at that so have to wait for OH to sort it.

Funny reading on here how Ben Culey provided the Pilot cos that is exactly what I was told this afternoon as well. Was also told how popular it was because of having double seats for courting couples.

The man I was talking to lived at Wolferton in those days and was able to get return bus, fish & chips, go to the cinema and have a half pint of beer all for less than half a crown.

Sadly he couldn't help me with my quest to find out more about Boughton & Son photographers or my picture of a man on a horse, although he does remember using a chap called Derek Neal based in the High Street.

Also said he enjoyed dancing and went to the dance hall in the Majestic whenever he could.

Only spent about an hour with him this afternoon but he really is a fascinating man and it turned out to be his 87th birthday today. One of the things I love about my job is that I meet some really interesting people.

I really enjoyed reading about the Pilot Cinema. Probably due to the memories it evokes (especially the double seaters). The knowledge of so many Forum members and records kept of the history of King's Lynn is incredible and fascinating too. I noticed some of the railway records go back over 128 years (Approx.)

The Benefers owned the shop opposite the Pilot Jools, there is a picture on here already.
Search +NORTH STREET or +BENEFER and you should find it.
But there again it all depends on how far back you go.

Hello Wendy. Somebody emailed those pictures to me many moons ago but I cannot remember who.

Who owns the copywrite I have no idea.

I had to do some digital work with a series of prints of the Pilot, including those shots. They were taken by Goodchilds. Will try to search my files to see who commissioned the work.

I was told yesterday that the old cinema is to be pulled down and 28 dwellings to
be erected. Do not know if that is gospel but came from a reliable source. Many
happy memories there. The last movie I saw there was Jaws. What about you?

Good grief, that's a classic piece of King's Lynn architecture. There's only the Pilot Cinema and the old Ford garage (now the tool hire place) next to the South Gates that I can think of as representing that style of 1930s architecture in the town.

You don't happen to know who owns it, EWW?

Edit: Nothing listed on the planning portal that I can see other than the 1998 carpark alterations.

That well known local entrepreneur Ian Williamson owns it Al. I was talking
to someone that does a bit of contracting for him in the building game
and it was he that told me. People have been in there for weeks clearing
it out.

It is the same with the Harvester pub. Panksy who owns it only bought
it to pull down and build on. I see in the paper that that is what is going
to happen.

Last film I saw in the Pilot was close encounters of the third kind, didnt seem that long ago but I suppose it must have been.

i remember when they used to have live shows at the pilot, also at thesaturday morning pictures i remembersomeone saying if you saty at the left you will get an orange when you leave , well!i did nt realize it was a joke, and ran to the left side and everyone roared with laughter ! still wnberyl the perilt back and loved it there I think when i was home in kings lynn once it was a skating place?

Does anybody know when the Pilot Cinema closed and what the final film shown was? The only time I remember going here was to see Battlestar Galactica back in 1978.
