Looks like they are showing Wise Girl which would date the pic as 1937. Movie review on this site - http://www.prairienet.org/ejahiel/wise_girl.htm

I wonder if that is when the cinema opened. 8)

Snow white and the 7 dwarfs was first picture shown at the Pilot.
released to cinemas in 1938. In the story of the northenders,
it says old northender Ben Culey built it in that year. That pic
may not have been released over here till then. Radio City
Revels, the other pic on the inside board was also 1938.

Pilot Cinema

Postby Mouse » 15 Nov 2010, 18:05

I was chatting to a gentleman on Saturday who, when I said I lived in King's Lynn, started reminiscing about places he used to visit here around about 1940. He mentioned the Pilot Cinema and also a pub he thinks was the Fishermans Arms, anybody know if the buildings still exist, I shall see him again next Monday and it would be good to give him an update.

He also said he remembers a photographer being on the High Street so shall take him a copy of the photo of a man on a horse I posted on November 9th along with details of photographer, never know he may have some information for me. If so I'll post it on here.

Fisherman's Arms building is still there Mouse it is now the Chinese Restaurant next to the old pilot
cinema. The old Fisherman's Arms was in Pilot St. The last landlord in the old pub and the first in
the new was Walter Setchell. There is a thread on here about it.

Thanks Ev, would he have used the old pub or the new one in 1940? Was the cinema the building that became Zoots?

The 1940's youth of Lynn will be eternally grateful to Ben Culey - the only cinema that provided double seats!

I lived in Pilot Street for the first 15 years of my life and have many happy memories of the Pilot Cinema. Fred Calvert put on some great shows there and I was even in one myself aged about 8. The cinema is a one off, so art deco how popular would it be today, a real show piece in its day. Thanks so much for the photos is it possible to buy them for my book I have made of growing up in Kings Lynn.

Hello Wendy. Somebody emailed those pictures to me many moons ago but I cannot remember who.

Who owns the copywrite I have no idea.

I still have the high res emailed ones so could send you copies if you wish.

Just say the word and it will be done.
