Hi old-git,
Do you think that the top picture shows the coal-hoist in Bentinck Dock? Tall black object about 4cm from left side and 5cm down from top of photo.

The Dock and Railway Company was set up in 1865 and construction began on the new dock on the old river bed.

1868, the laying of the dock foundation stone. Mrs Jarvis, wife of the Dock Company chairman, with trowel in hand.

The dock was opened by Royalty in 1869. Rail links were added in 1870, but by the look of this map they thought about bringing a rail line from the dock around the back of the corn exchange and down to the south quay.

I think this was not long after the dock opened.
