I visited West Norfolk Community Bank at the St Augustine's Centre on Friday morning and applied to open a savings account in the Norfolk Credit Union http://www.norfolkcu.co.uk/ - it was about as painless an application as a bank can do now (money-laundering regulations) and the volunteers were very helpful so I'd like to recommend them. I should get my paying-in card in the next week or two and can use it at Post Offices and Paypoints, so I only need visit the bank again if I want to apply for a loan or current account.

A Credit Union is a sort of savings and loans co-operative, controlled by its savers and borrowers who are its members. That means if you save, you are keeping your money local, and if you borrow, you are borrowing from your county and not distant bankers who maybe don't care about the community. A wide range of supporters, from Hollywood celebrities to the Occupy protesters, are suggesting that you Move Your Money and increase community control over banking during 2012, the United Nations International Year of Cooperatives.
