White's Directory of 1845 states: The
Swaffham union was comprised of all the parishes of
South Greenhoe Hundred Bodney,
East & West Bradenham,
Caldecote, Cockley Cley, Lt. & Gt. Cressingham, Didlington,
Foulden, Gooderstone, Hilborough, Holme Hale,
Houghton on
the Hill, Langford, Narborough, Narford, Necton, Newton,
Oxborough, Nth & Sth Pickenham, Southacre, Sporle with
Palgrave, and Swaffham, plus the parishes of Beachamwell
and Shingham in the Clackclose Hundred and Ashill, Saham Toney and Threxton in the Wayland Hundred.
Also included
were Buckenham Tofts, Ickburgh, Colveston and Stanford
in the Grimshoe Hundred.
The workhouse at Swaffham was built in 1836 with housing
for 300 persons but in summer was rarely used
by more than 100
