According to White's Directory 1845, Sheringham had an incorporated house of Industry for these nine parishes:
Aldborough, Aylmerton, East Beckham, Beeston Regis, Cromer, Felbrigg, Gresham, Runton and Sheringham in 1841.
This house of industry was built in 1805 and situated in Upper Sheringham. It was later altered to take in more inmates.
A further house of industry was situated in Gimingham, set up under the Gilbert Acts and was operating at the same time. On formation of the Erpingham Union a new workhouse was built at
West Beckham to accommodate this huge Union of 49 parishes.
Gimingham and Sheringham then closed.
