In White's Directory of 1845 it states that the Union is comprised of all 40 of the parishes of Loddon and Clavering Hundreds, and also Yelverton. These 41 parishes were incorporated for the support of the poor, by act of Parliament in 1763, when they built a large House of Industry at Heckingham with room for about 500 paupers. This was adopted as the Union Workhouse, in 1836, was much damaged by fire, supposedly by an incendiary and was repaired, altered and enlarged and now has room for 600 paupers.
The parishes named are:
Aldeby, Brooke, Burgh-Apton, Burgh St. Peter, Ellingham, Geldeston, Gillingham All Saints & St. Mary, Haddiscoe, Hales, Heckingham, Howe, Kirby Cane, Norton Subcourse, Stockton, Thorp-next-Haddiscoe, Thurlton, Toft Monks, Wheatacre All Saints, Alpington, Ashby, Bedlingham, Broome, Carleton St. Peter, Chedgrave, Ditchingham, Hardley, Hedenham, Hillington, Kirstead, Langley, Loddon, Mundham, Seething, Sisland, Thurton, Thwaite with St. Mary, Topcroft, Woodton and Yelverton from the Henstead Hundred.
