In 1841 there were two houses of industry for the poor the
one at
Sheringham had incorporated the parishes of Aldborough,
Aylmerton, East & West Beckham, Felbrigg, Cromer, Gresham,
and Beeston Regis.
The House of Industry at Gimingham
catered to the parishes of Gimingham, Knapton, Mundesley,
Sidestrand, Northrepps & Southrepps,Trimingham & Trunch.
However these houses of industry became the workhouses of
the Erpingham Union, which comprised all 32 parishes of North
Erpingham, with 14 parishes from Holt, Nth Walsham in the
Tunstead Hundred and Baconsthorpe, & West Beckham in the
South Erpingham Hundred.
On formation of the Erpingham Union a new workhouse was built at
West Beckham to accommodate this huge Union of 49 parishes.
Gimingham and Sheringham then closed.
