Old Norfolk Photographs

See the wealth of Norfolk through old postcards and photographs.  We are attempting here to portray the fading views of the parishes.  Our search for progress is rapidly changing our landscape, lost forever, apart from the images of the past.  Each parish had it's own unique profile. Recognisable to all the older folks from memory. The long country lanes, with the overhanging branches of massive oaks and every other tree you could name.  The mode of transport, the dress of the day and the magnificent buildings, all unique to our ancestors.  Before the motorised vehicle, most country folk probably went by horse and cart, but many used to tread these lovely roads, many of them unpaved, cutting across the fields to make shortcuts, using the alleys and rows  in the case of Yarmouth and Norwich. These small narrow passages gave barely enough room to walk side by side.  The wealth of tradition of our fishermen and the harvest of the sea, now rapidly changing with the new age.  These are just a small snapshots of the times.  Other sites are manned with beautiful images  and they really do aid you in the understanding of how your ancestors lived and thrived. Seek out the sites that show you these - several are listed on our Links page.

I can personally remember walking to Winterton from Hemsby when I was about 13 or so and took the paved road, going past the mill corner etc.  Half way there I was a bit tired so I sat down on the verge and gave a sigh of relief.  Suddenly a head popped up from the other side of the hedgerow and a voice "Ar ya awright gal?"  Of course I replied to the affirmative and got into a conversation with the farm labourer about the sugar beet he was hoeing.  I suppose he knew me or was taking his lunch break, but the folks were so friendly and always looking out for the other person.

We acknowledge with grateful thanks those folks who have donated these images to Norfolkhistory.

If you can add to these, we would appreciate it.

Jonathan Neville, the webmaster, for Norfolkhistory, repairs the images if damaged and enhances the reproduction of all photographs on my site.  He has all the necessary equipment and has been doing this for some considerable time. See wildlife photos etc. www.mossymere.co.uk.  You may contact Jonathan for enhancement of your personal postcards or photographs, for which there is a charge.
