Archdeacons' Transcripts

Archdeacon's Transcripts are the yearly returns, copied from the parish registers or transcribed from slips of paper and sent to the Archdeacon each year. Many are extant, some for earlier periods, but in the main those from 1725 1812 have been transcribed as they are more easily read by the amateur. The vast majority have part years and whole years missing and there is a need to consult the parish registers. However, it is strongly advised that in order to research one parish the AT's are always consulted as many old researchers will verifty, sometimes entries are in the transcripts that are not recorded in the parish registers. This section is devoted to the Archdeacon's Transcripts, which were transcribed by my valued friend of many years Linda Steward. They were transcribed from fiche purchased from the Norfolk Record Office and this fiche can still be purchased, also the LDS has most of the AT's on film and you can peruse them at the the LDS establishments.

If you find a relative in these AT’s then view the holdings at the Norfolk Record Office site, where the listings of Church records, ( parish registers, AT’s, and BT’s ) are given for each parish in Norfolk. You can contact them for the specific page or view the actual parish registers from film, also films of some registers can be found in your local Family History centre. Do not rely on one source only – even Vicars make mistakes. Remember he is transcribing his own handwriting and making errors, and we are transcribing his. Select the individual parish needed from the alphabetical list at the NRO site:

Burials
The Burials in Wool Acts of 1667 and 1678, were initiated to protect the Domestic Wool Trade, making it mandatory to be buried in sheeps wool.  There was a penalty of £5.0.0d for failure to do so, but some exemptions did apply.  The affidavits were entered in the burial registers etc, the AT's (see Little Ryburgh)  and sometimes were retained in the many Parish Chests.   The law was rescinded in 1814.
